Making a Map About Invisible Mountain

Ttŏkkebi (Alien) sets out on a journey to Korea in search of someone. The “I,” an alien researcher, accompanies the alien on this journey, encountering the history embedded in the areas surrounding U.S. military bases. The “I” also traces the everyday lives of U.S. military “comfort women” who were confined under the pretext of receiving treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, as well as the history of the land near the military bases—land where these women were buried. At the end of the journey, the “I” and Ttŏkkebi arrive at Sangpaesan, a mountain of graves where the bodies of U.S. military “comfort women” whose remains were never claimed by their families were buried.

Director’s Statement

The U.S. military “comfort women” were confined to gijichon (military camptowns) in the name of a “national enterprise” and, having been rendered nameless and insignificant within society, were buried in a cemetery in Sangpae-dong, Dongducheon. The cemetery, where the remains of women whose bodies were never claimed by their families lie, is soon to be exhumed. In November 2023, Dongducheon City announced plans to relocate the graves, with the site scheduled to be redeveloped as a public park for local residents. This work seeks to document and preserve the traces of the cemetery before they disappear.

『存在しない山』

トッケビ(エイリアン)は、誰かを探すために韓国への旅に出る。エイリアン研究者である「私」はその旅に同行し、米軍基地周辺の地域が抱える歴史に出会う。「私」はまた、性感染症の治療を名目に監禁されていた米軍慰安婦たちの日常と、掘り起こされた基地近くの土地――米軍慰安婦が埋葬されていた土地の歴史をたどっていく。旅の終わりに、「私」とトッケビは上牌山(サンペサン)にたどり着く。そこは、引き取り手のない米軍慰安婦たちの遺体が埋葬された、墓の山である。

演出意図
米軍慰安婦たちは「国家的事業」の名の下に基地村(キジチョン)へと囚われ、社会の中で名もなき、取るに足らない存在とされたがゆえに、東豆川市上牌洞の墓地に埋葬された。親族に引き取られることのなかった彼女たちの遺骨が眠るその墓は、まもなく掘り返される。2023年11月、東豆川市が墓地の開葬計画を発表したためである。埋葬地は市民のための公園へと造成される予定だ。本作は、消え去る前の墓の痕跡を記録し、留めようとするものである。
