Good Valley Stories

Good Valley Stories takes us to Vallbona, a small settlement on the outskirts of Barcelona, where a diverse community lives surrounded by rivers, railway lines and abundant nature. Long-time residents live alongside new generations of immigrants who have arrived from places including India, Jamaica, Russia and Ukraine. Despite their different backgrounds and ways of life, the inhabitants share the rhythms of everyday life — children playing in the river, meals, conversations, songs and celebrations.

But this seemingly secluded oasis is threatened by plans for a new railway extension, forcing some residents to face the possibility of leaving their homes. Over the course of three years, José Luis Guerín filmed the people and landscapes of Vallbona with an attentive and intimate gaze.

Blurring the boundaries between documentary and fiction, Good Valley Stories becomes a portrait of a place in transition — and of the people who inhabit it, carrying their memories, hopes and uncertainties into an ever-changing world. The film received the Special Jury Prize at the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival.

『よき谷の物語』

バルセロナ郊外の小さな集落、バルボナ地区を舞台に、そこに暮らす人々と移りゆく土地の姿を見つめる。川や線路に囲まれたこの場所には、20世紀半ばから暮らしてきた住民たちと、インド、ジャマイカ、ロシア、ウクライナなど世界各地からやってきた新しい移民たちが共に暮らしている。文化や生活背景は異なっていても、子どもたちは川で遊び、人々は食卓を囲み、語り、歌い、踊る。

しかし、都会のすぐそばに残されたこの小さな楽園にも、鉄道の増設計画が持ち上がる。一部の住民は立ち退きを迫られ、土地とそこに生きる人々の日常は少しずつ変化していく。ホセ・ルイス・ゲリンは3年にわたりバルボナにカメラを向け、そこに暮らす人々の声や記憶、日々の営みを丁寧に記録した。

ドキュメンタリーとフィクションの境界を行き来しながら、『よき谷の物語』は、ひとつの土地とそこに生きる人々の肖像を通して、変わり続ける世界の過去、現在、そして未来を映し出している。第73回サン・セバスティアン国際映画祭で審査員特別賞を受賞。
