The Great Arch

“The Great Arch” tells the extraordinary story behind one of Paris’s most iconic landmarks: La Grande Arche de La Défense. In 1983, Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, virtually unknown outside his country and with only a handful of small buildings to his name, unexpectedly wins the international competition launched by President François Mitterrand.

What begins as an ambitious architectural vision soon becomes a struggle between idealism and reality. Spreckelsen is determined to realise his project without compromise, while the growing scale of the construction, budget constraints and shifting political circumstances bring him into conflict with those tasked with making the building possible. As the project is gradually altered around him, the architect finds himself increasingly isolated from the building he imagined.

Set against the political and social transformation of 1980s France, The Great Arch is both an intimate portrait of an architect and a story about the fragile relationship between an individual vision and the collective forces required to bring architecture into being. A bittersweet drama about ambition, compromise and the price of holding on to an ideal.

『新凱旋門物語』

パリを代表するランドマークのひとつ、ラ・グランダルシュ（新凱旋門）が誕生するまでの知られざる物語を描く。1983年、フランスのミッテラン大統領が主催した国際コンペで、デンマークでは小さな教会など数えるほどの建築しか手がけていなかった無名の建築家、ヨハン・オットー・フォン・スプレッケルセンが、誰もが予想しなかった勝利を収める。

しかし、壮大な建築的ヴィジョンから始まったプロジェクトは、やがて理想と現実のせめぎ合いへと変わっていく。自らの構想に一切の妥協を許さないスプレッケルセンに対し、建設規模の拡大、予算の制約、そして政治状況の変化が次々と立ちはだかる。現実の建設を担う建築家たちとの対立が深まるなか、自らの思い描いた建築が少しずつ変えられていくことに、彼は孤立を深めていく。

1980年代フランスの政治と社会が大きく変化する時代を背景に、『The Great Arch』はひとりの建築家の肖像であると同時に、ひとつのヴィジョンが、建築を実現するための集団や政治、経済といった力といかに衝突するのかを描く物語でもある。理想を貫くこと、妥協すること、その選択がもたらすものを描いた、ほろ苦い人間ドラマ。
